Mr. Chancellor:
By the authority of the Senate of McMaster University, I have the honour to present Edward Wallace Buffett.
Through his business and his careers as a professional and a volunteer, Ed Buffett has devoted himself to improving health, health care and wellness in Canada. He is a leader who embodies the philosophy of thinking globally and acting locally and, by reaching out and improving the lives of the people around him, he has created a legacy that extends across the country.
Mr. Buffett is the president and chief executive officer of (Buffett & Company Worksite Wellness Inc.) a firm specializing in…worksite wellness. He was a member of the federal government’s Action Research Roundtable on Workplace Wellbeing and has served as a member of the board of HealNet, a national network of researchers aiming to improve decision-making at all levels of the health care system.
Mr. Buffett is co-author of Health Promotion - A Sourcebook for Canadian Business, a text that has become a foundation reference for a number of college and university wellness curricula. He has also penned the (Buffett & Company) National Wellness Survey Report
as well as numerous features in national publications including The National Post, The Globe and Mail and Canadian Healthcare Manager.
Following a near-fatal heart attack in 1994, Mr. Buffett rededicated himself to enhancing the wellness of his various communities. He convened the innovative Toronto Health Summit,
a gathering of Canadian business leaders concerned with the health and well-being of their employees. That summit gave spark to the Wellness Council of Canada of which Mr. Buffett became the first chair. Subsequently, he joined the board of the Wellness Council of America. He was appointed to the Canadian Managed Care Group, a cluster of prominent health care opinion leaders, and to the editorial advisory board of Employee Health & Productivity.
