TORONTO, February 9, 2007– There is no national holiday between New Year's Day
and Easter, and with the gloomy days and early nights, the negative impact of these
months on the well-being of the workforce is high. Recently, Ed Buffett, President and CEO of Buffett & Company Worksite Wellness Inc. reflected on the long, dark, cold days of January and February, and the harsh impact of these months on his employees. In
his earlier days employed by others, Ed often pondered, "If I were the boss, I would...." and
he hasn't let the success of his own business dismiss these dreams of the past.
In January 2007, Ed Buffett used his clout as boss and CEO of Buffett & Company to bring light to the dark days of winter: he created National Winter Wellness Day, which falls on
the second Monday in February each year. National Winter Wellness Day is
a holiday dedicated to the employee. It is a day for employers to pay tribute to the
hard work and dedication
of employees by giving them a day to themselves, at a time when they need it most.
"In our line of business, so often decision-makers are solely fixated on disease - management and reductions in employee costs that they forget the real value of their employees. We need to prove to our employees that they are extremely valuable to
us, and that their dedication and commitment does not go unnoticed," says Buffett. "Furthermore, we need to contribute, as best we can, to their happiness by helping to
foster a 'love of life' by giving them time to enjoy what life has to offer. A zest for life increases one's sense of joy, worth and belonging, and leads to a more satisfied,
creative and actively engaged employee."
Ed Buffett's dedicated February holiday provides the perfect opportunity for his staff to enjoy their lives. By giving the Monday as a "free day", Buffett & Company staff avoid
the day most notorious for heart attacks, they avoid the rush of the mall on a weekend,
and they have time to sleep in when others are stuck in traffic. A Canadian workday in February doesn't get much better than that.
And what does Ed get in return? Says Buffett, "I get energized, creative and dedicated people to work with everyday. The team environment at Buffett & Company is envied
by all, and I wouldn't have it any other way!"
